To replace a handle

The cost of replacing a handle varies depending on the type and size of the knife. The Japanese style handle can be replaced the same day it arrives. It would take time and cost extra (more) to replace the knife if the tang (nakago) rusts badly. Although a handle is normally replaced to fit the size of the knife, the other kind of handle can be replaced as the customer requires. For the western style knife, it takes about a month to replace the handle by the expert craftsman. We recommend to replace a handle before it is damaged badly. If you continue using a knife that has diminished in size from years of sharpening or whose handle cracks due to rusted tang (nakago) and it becomes brittle and might be broken during use. We recommend that the handle of the knife should be replaced new one before the damage becomes worse.

Estimates as examples

Cutting edge becomes dull, or edge retention does not last long

Sharpening cost: 1,100 yen (Sharpening fee: 1,000 yen + 10% Consumption tax: 100 yen)

※ The total amount varies depending on the size of the knife and how badly the blade is damaged.

A small chip is ground, and the cutting edge is thinned while judging the thickness of the knife and the properties of the steel material. As a result. it will cut into the ingredients well as before and it becomes easier to sharpen the knife by yourself. It usually takes about a week to finish repairing.

Cutting edge is greatly chipped (the shape has been lost and it’s difficult to use)

Repair Cost: 2,200 yen (Repair fee: 2,000 yen + 10% Consumption tax: 200 yen)

※ The total amount varies depending on the size of the knife and how badly the blade is damaged.

Considering the balance of the entire knife, the chip is ground to remove and repaired to an easy-to-use shape. Please note that the cutting edge becomes narrower after repairing. As the knife is entirely repaired to reshape, it usually takes about a week to finish repairing either when you come to pick it up or send it back by mail.

The surface of Western style knife rusts

Repair Cost: 1,650 yen (Repair fee: 1,500 yen+ 10% Consumption tax: 150 yen)

※ The total amount varies depending on the size of the knife and how badly the blade is damaged.

Rust on the surface of the knife is removed and the blade is sharpened to be shiny. Please understand in advance that if the rust is deep, the engraving and mirror surface processing of the blade may be removed, and all rust may not be able to be removed. It usually takes about a week to finish repairing either when you come to pick it up or send it back by mail.

Repair of the back of Japanese style knife

Repair Cost: 2,200 yen (Repair fee: 2,000 yen + 10% Consumption tax: 200 yen)

※ The total amount varies depending on the size of the knife and how badly the blade is damaged.

The back of the blade (urasuki), which is slightly depressed and curved as a characteristic of Japanese style kitchen knives, is re-made to its original state. Please understand in advance that if the rust is deep, the engraving and mirror surface processing may be removed, and all rust may not be able to be removed. It usually takes about a week to finish repairing either when you come to pick it up or send it back by mail.

The handle of Japanese style knife is damaged, cracked or broken

Repair Cost: 3,410 yen (Sharpening fee: 1,000 yen+ Nakago tang welding: 1,600 yen+ Plastic collar: 500 yen+ 10% Consumption tax: 310 yen)

※ The total amount varies depending on the size of the knife, how badly the blade is damaged and the type of handles.

The handle of the Japanese style knife is replaced with a new handle. In addition, even if the tang (nakago) inserted into the handle is worn out, a new nakago tang can be welded and a new handle can be replaced. If you’re only exchanging the handle you can come to the store and ask for a same day repair. If you request the repair by mail, we will repair it and return it the same day it arrives.
Several types of handles are available, such as a magnolia handle with a plastic collar, a chestnut shape magnolia handle with a water buffalo horn collar, an octagonal magnolia handle with a water buffalo horn collar and an octagonal ebony handle with a water buffalo horn collar.* Please note that if welding is needed, it will take about 1 month to finish repairing.
*The price varies depending on the type of handle.

The handle of the Western style knife is damaged, cracked, or taken off

Repair cost: 6,270 yen (Sharpening fee: 1,500 yen + Replacing new handle: 4,200 yen* + 10% Consumption tax: 570 yen)

*Depending on the condition it will cost about 4,000 to 6,500 yen only for replacing the handle
※ The total amount varies depending on the size of the knife and how badly the blade is damaged

A new handle is replaced to fit the knife. It is possible to repair even if welding is needed as the blade is badly damaged, If the blade is damaged badly enough we will use the Tsuba part (metal part between the blade and the handle) to repair and weld it, or if the Tsuba part is missing. In addition, please note that the shape and material of the handle may not be exactly the same as the one you have. It usually takes about a month to finish repairing, either when you come to pick it up in person or it is sent back by mail
